  • Aaron Hammond, who you might remember from his blog post about helping Rommel Construction save time and money by changing their jobsite setup, has written in with another success story. Keep reading to see how Hammond was able to help another contractor increase profits while decreasing workload through Southwire’s SIMpull Solutions® innovations.

Joe Zalewski, a Senior Project Manager with Battaglia Electric, called in the summer of 2016 to inform me of a possible Southwire copper contract for the brand-new Bayhealth campus project in Milford, Delaware. He was managing it and wanted to learn more about Southwire’s SIMpull Solutions® innovations. We scheduled a time to meet so I could hear more about his needs and present Southwire’s suite of solutions to him. Joe hadn’t used any of the SIMpull Solutions® products yet but was definitely interested in trying what we had to offer.

SIMpull Solutions®After our initial meeting and a couple jobsite meetings, Joe was convinced that some of Southwire’s SIMpull Solutions® products would be a good fit for the Bayhealth job. His approach was, “If it creates value, I am going to use it”. The first solution he was looking to try was the SIMpull® CoilPAK™ wire payoffs, but he needed a loaner SIMpull™ CoilPAK™ cart. I was able to provide two loaner carts and some pulling accessories to start. I brought the carts to his job and provided a training session to ensure his crew knew the proper handling procedures for using the SIMpull® CoilPAK™ wire payoffs. From there, I left the carts for about three weeks on his jobsite and followed up a couple times.

The outcome was all positive and they ended up buying our SIMpull™ CoilPAK™ carts for the job. By utilizing the products within Southwire’s SIMpull Solutions® innovations, Joe and his crew were able to work smarter and faster. In fact, they enjoyed the benefits of the SIMpull® CoilPAK™ wire payoffs so much that they recently placed another order for SIMpull™ CoilPAK™ carts. They explained that they had experienced a material and labor savings since using the SIMpull® CoilPAK™ wire payoffs compared to their traditional means and methods of installing circuit sized wire. This was a great success for both Battaglia Electric and Southwire. With over 1.8 million feet of #12 & #10 wire to install, they were able to save a ton of time and have their circuits installed in a safer, more productive way using Southwire’s SIMpull® CoilPAK™ wire payoffs.

  • Engineers

Celebrated since 1951, National Engineers Week – or EWeek – is a time to encourage the upcoming generation of students to pursue a career path in engineering. Done through public awareness campaigns of engineering achievements, each year has a theme to help recognize the many different ways that engineering impacts our daily lives and shapes our future. Held from February 18-24, the theme for 2018’s EWeek is Inspiring Wonder, and Southwire is celebrating by highlighting the wonder inspired in students at the Southwire Engineering Academy (SWEA).

EngineersDeveloped jointly with the Carrollton City School System, SWEA is a cooperative education program for promising students enrolled in the Carrollton High School STEM program to gain firsthand experience in the engineering field. To apply, the students submit their applications to their school CTAE Director who then, with a panel of teachers and school administrators, decide which applicants to accept. Several factors are taken into consideration, including grades, attendance record, and attitude.

“Because this is such a competitive program, we try to combine rigorous classwork with student interests to ensure that we are sending over some of our best students to Southwire,” affirmed Principal David Brooks. “While our students are intellectually capable, we want the applicants to have the enthusiasm for SWEA’s material too.”

Once in the program, the students are split into small groups and given a year to tackle manufacturing and technological challenges that full-time engineers would face in their careers. Each group is supported by two Southwire engineers who act as mentors to the students and assist in the process of discovery and experimentation. As they are working on Southwire’s campus with employees, the students are also expected to conduct themselves to Southwire’s professional and safety standards.

“Watching the students grow from high school seniors to young professionals is one of the most exciting parts of the SWEA program to me,” relayed Theresa Fisher, Southwire’s Power Systems & Solutions Manufacturing Training Specialist who oversees the SWEA program. “As they work together on engineering challenges, they are learning valuable collaborative, presentation, and communication skills. They are relying on each other to bring their best selves to SWEA so that they gain the confidence to discuss ideas with full-time engineers as if they’ve been working in the industry for decades too.”

EngineersThe benefits of SWEA go beyond exposing high school students to practical engineering projects and professionalism. Southwire is committed to developing a sustainable future workforce, an objective that our CEO, Rich Stinson, wrote about in his op-ed article featured in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The goal for a sustainable workforce includes engineers, as their product innovations streamline current efficiencies and open up the construction opportunities of tomorrow. As our series of blogs about megatrends have indicated, the next generation of engineers will have to create solutions for the energy demands of smart cities and how to retrofit aging infrastructures.

“One of the things that is so positive about the program is that not only are the students working on real world engineering challenges, but they’re also getting a head start on their careers,” stated Dr. Mark Albertus, the Carrollton City School System’s Superintendent. “Because Southwire is such a cutting edge company, the students are being exposed to what the future holds in engineering. I’m so thankful for Southwire’s partnership with this. It’s not only benefitting the school system, but Carroll County as a whole.”

  • Southwire’s Contractor Solutions team is proud to introduce the Configurator Plus™ Web App.This cloud-connected, username-specific, function-automating tool allows the user to more easily make updates to his or her wire feeder schedule by desktop, laptop or tablet.

Intended for contractors, distributors, agents, engineers and more, the purpose of the application is to enable the user to configure each wire pull by inputting the length, wire type/size, circuit ID/tag info and pulling sequence. Making corrections and adjustments to each process is simple and provides an uncomplicated method for communicating jobsite feeder pulling information.

“Prior to the update, Southwire’s Configurator app was only available on the iPad, limiting the scope of use,” said Russ King, the Director of Contractor Solutions Professionals. “With our new, cloud-based platform, the Configurator Plus™ web app can be used with almost any device that connects to the internet and provides the user with greater accessibility, more functionality, faster quotes and direct wire requests.”

ConfiguratorTo develop the upgraded platform, Southwire partnered with Mutual Mobile, an innovation consultancy that brings digital experiences to life through an integrated approach to design and technology.

“The Southwire Configurator Plus™ web app is redefining the ordering and planning of wiring materials. It is engineered and designed to provide a frictionless experience that gets customers a quote and back on the job,” relayed Brooks Rhinehart and Jess Moss, Mutual Mobile’s Senior Client Director and UX Lead in a joint statement. “Southwire and Mutual Mobile are dedicated to continuing to improve the process, speed, and functionality in an industry that is ready to embrace the newest ideas.”

Communicating within the application is simpler than ever before with easy to use templates and the option to create feeder schedules and send wire pull information or requests for quote directly to the appropriate stakeholders within the portal.

  • Many electricians dread the fatigue that comes with bending, knowing that having to bend over for long periods of time may strain their backs and possibly cause injury over time. Southwire is proud to present the BENDMAX™ power bender, a mobile, all-in-one, unique power bender for ¾”- 2” EMT, IMC, and rigid conduit that features a revolutionary elevation control. This control improves bending ergonomics, and helps improve overall safety and productivity of the electrician.

“Having the ability to bend conduit with correct posture and not slumped over with heavy conduit in your hands will definitely speed up the efficiency of any crew,” Explains Tim Bardin, Director of Equipment Products at Southwire. “We spend a lot of time in the field, studying the pain points of the electrician and how we can improve their wellbeing while helping them become more productive. The BENDMAX™ power bender is just another bending tool from Southwire that does just that.”

Southwire’s BENDMAX™ power bender offers the ability for bends to be made in a vertical or horizontal arrangement. Along with the safety benefits of using this bender, there will be no fear of losing shoes or handling a storage box full of parts. This reduces the chance of having to purchase different parts over time, saving money on replacement expenses.

The BENDMAX™ power bender allows electricians of various heights to maneuver the stand in the most comfortable and safe position for each individual. The elevation can be quickly and easily adjusted with the supplied handle or a standard 18 volt drill. Mounted on a one-piece cart with heavy duty casters and wheels, the BENDMAX™ power bender offers easy maneuverability, as well as a heavy duty conduit roller stand that is stored on board and reduces the need for additional manpower.

Southwire has a long history of designing, manufacturing and distributing a wide range of tools and equipment, made with the electrician in mind. Southwire now extends their legacy with the BENDMAX™ power bender, setting your crew up for safety and productivity.

  • Southwire generates workforce productivity with the new SIMpull™ Cable Guide System. The innovative system eliminates the need for manual handling of feeder sized electrical power cables, allowing your crew to target other areas where work is needed. The Cable Guide System is an integrated guidance system which allows wire and cable to be routed from a reel into a conduit or cable tray without human intervention.

“Typically feeding cable is a job that can take up to five members of your crew, but the Cable Guide System can reduce the amount of manpower to only one member of your crew on the feeding end of your pull,” describes Tim Bardin, Director of Equipment Products. “This reduction of manpower means your employees can be directed towards other tasks of the job, possibly leading to huge savings and reduced time on the jobsite. The system’s benefit of eliminating manual handling of power cable will also eliminate the risk of injury and exhaustion associated with manual handling practices.”

The guide system is customizable for any wire and cable installation, ensuring your needs can be met with one piece of equipment. The Cable Guide System comes complete with a specialized storage cart for easy transport. Rollers and tracks elevate wire and cable off the ground, leading to savings by removing the tendency to drag cable on the ground, causing damage.

Southwire has a long history of developing and manufacturing innovative products with the electrician in mind. Southwire continues this legacy with the SIMpull™ Cable Guide System, an innovative way to save money and guide your workforce where it’s needed most.
