Bringing it all to light for contractors

 Press Releases

  • Chicago, IL – July 18, 2019 – Chicago based luminaires manufacturer Focal Point will feature a variety of new and established products (booth 3248) at the National Electrical Contractors Association’s NECA Show, September 15-17 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

“The NECA Show is an important event for us. Electrical contractors have played a vital role in our success and the products we are bringing to this show reflect our commitment to them,” said Mike Thornton, Chief Marketing Officer for Focal Point.

“Our products and services are designed to meet the needs of contractors in the intensely competitive commercial market. A dedicated section of our website – the Contractor Zone – makes it easy to find everything they need, from installation instructions and videos to contractor luminaire packages and easy access to our field service team. Our Quickship program allows them to meet short project schedules with a vast selection of luminaires that ship within a 5- to 10-day window. Also, our Connected Solutions program offers a broad range of connected luminaires that give contractors greater latitude to choose from.”

Connected Solutions is a multi-partner program that features smart luminaires which are ready to integrate with preeminent, whole building lighting control solutions to meet energy code or green building certification requirements. Utilizing both wired and wireless networks, they allow for individual control, occupancy sensing, and daylight harvesting to optimize lighting and temperature for the ultimate in comfort and energy efficiency.

Focal Point will showcase several products that specifically meet the needs of contractors, such as a new ID+ 4.5² round and square Downlight. The new luminaire provides the latest in LED technology with increased performance and efficacy. As with most Focal Point products, it is easy to install and provides great flexibility. Contractors will like the universal housing that accommodates ceiling thicknesses from 0.5² to 3.0² and gives them the power to change trims in the field. Another popular aperture for commercial projects, the ID+ 3.5² round and square Downlight, will also be on display.

Seem 1 Acoustic, part of Focal Point’s Acoustics Solutions program, will be represented with lit and unlit units. The flexible linear luminaire and baffle system is designed to increase comfort and well-being while meeting the design and budget needs of each project. The integrated lighting and sound management system leverages the powerful light engine of Seem 1 and controls sound, using eco-friendly, patent-pending AirCore technology to maximize sound absorption with a per unit Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 1.05.

Another popular product to be shown is Amica 2, an economical architectural troffer designed for shallow plenum applications. The low profile luminaire is known for its superior performance that meets the DesignLights Consortium® (DLC) Premium status, as well as its integration capabilities with building control systems.

Focal Point will also provide hands-on demonstrations of the Seem 1 and Seem 2 simplified joining, engineered to support the needs of contractors, as well as Seem 4-LP and the ID+ 3.5² Downlight.

  • Chicago, IL – April 9, 2019 – Focal Point is addressing needs beyond lighting with Seem® 1 Acoustic. The luminaire and baffle system, part of the company’s Acoustics Solutions program, is intended to improve human comfort and resolve some of the challenges of today’s commercial environments. The integrated system is designed to simplify the specification, sourcing and installation process while procuring a unified look that enhances interior architecture.

“By always listening to the market, we are continuing the evolution of the Seem product line to meet the needs of specifiers,” stated Mike Thornton, Chief Marketing Officer for Focal Point LLC. “Focal Point is bringing a new value proposition to the market, built around visual and acoustical comfort to enhance today’s open workplaces.”Seem

Seem 1 Acoustic is a linear luminaire and baffle system designed on the Seem 1 platform using an eco-friendly, sound absorbing housing material. The new system leverages the advanced light engine, narrow aperture, and various lumen outputs of Seem 1 while delivering a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 1.05. The flexible system uses patent- pending AirCore technology to maximize sound absorption.

A housing material made of 100 percent polyester containing up to 50 percent of recycled plastic bottles (PET) contributes to reducing its ecological impact and provides an ASTM E-84 Class A firing rating. The system can be specified with direct, indirect, or indirect-direct light distributions, or as an unlit acoustic baffle to achieve the desired illumination and acoustic reverberation levels with a coordinated look.

The newest addition to the Acoustics Solutions program is the AirCore Blade. The slim architectural acoustical blade that supports budget conscious projects made its debut at LEDucation 2019. It is designed and engineered using Focal Point’s patent-pending AirCore technology to acoustically outperform standard acoustical blades. Leveraging the same material and color palette as the Seem 1 Acoustic, it can be paired with Seem 1 Acoustic illuminated baffles to deliver optimal illumination and sound levels with a harmonized visual aesthetic.

In addition to expanding the acoustic portfolio, Focal Point is also introducing additional material color options. Standard, Premium and Extended color palettes enable designers to select from a variety of shades to deliver a personalized aesthetic.

“Designers are creating more human-centric environments and lighting is extending beyond luminaires,” remarked Thornton. “We are committed to providing the architecture and design community the tools to enhance architecture and elevate the human spirit. The Seem 1 Acoustic system and the AirCore Blade represent more ways we are delivering on this commitment.”

The Seem 1 Acoustic luminaire and baffle system not only delivers optimal illumination levels, it also controls sound, increasing comfort and well-being for those who inhabit the spaces. Thornton also said to expect more innovations focused around human health and well-being from Focal Point soon.

  • Chicago, IL – August 21, 2018 – Focal Point, a Chicago-based company, is known for creating and manufacturing innovative and unique commercial luminaires for over 20 years. Their approach to lighting goes beyond illumination with human-centric designs that improve commercial environments. The methods used to achieve this approach permeate the organization from engineering and assembly to the burgeoning team of Field Service representatives.

In today’s need-it-now world, contractors are increasingly utilizing the Focal Point Field Service team for their knowledge and impressive responsiveness. A dedicated group of skilled professionals with backgrounds in luminaire manufacturing or as electricians – in addition to Rich Shilkaitis, Director of Customer Service – they have the expertise to achieve the right outcome for any commercial project in the United States and Canada.

“We have a great, high performing technical team that understands the value of finding the right answers to get a job done. Their diverse backgrounds allow them to bring different perspectives to the table,” said Shilkaitis, who has spent 15 years in manufacturing, including the last three with Focal Point.

“Our team is well-rounded and they thrive on providing a personal touch to all our customers. Our vertically integrated operations allow us to respond to most inquiries the same day, whether it is sending replacement parts, providing installation tips or troubleshooting assistance. The Field Service team has access not only to our manufacturing facility and inventory for quick-turn parts, they can also draw from the knowledge of our Engineering team and staff electrician to get customers the answers they need. Depending on the project, sometimes we will partner and travel together to visit a jobsite, especially when it is a job with a short turnaround time.”

Additionally, Focal Point updated its website earlier this year and added a new Contractor Zone section. One of the most popular areas is Jobsite Conveniences, which offers information on a variety of features Focal Point offers and is geared towards saving contractors time and money on any job.

These features include simplified labeling, bulk packaging to reduce waste, installation videos hosted on the company’s YouTube Channel, and a specification-grade contractor luminaire package that makes it easy to select luminaires to outfit a complete space, all competitively priced and available via Quickship.

“The contractors we have heard from enjoy these conveniences, but our Field Service team is our greatest resource for contractors,” Shilkaitis said. “The nature of involving field service is often a result of something that went wrong or can’t be solved without help. We embrace the direct interaction with contractors. There are times when one of our team members will just grab a camera, head to the factory, demonstrate the solution and send it to the customer. A 30-second clip is often very helpful and just what they need to see to get the job done.”

Shilkaitis says his phone rings often about the Quickship program that offers contractors 5- and 10-day shipping options.

“They are really popular, especially the 5-day program. We have plans to expand our 5-day program with the introduction of additional luminaires in the near future.”

Shilkaitis recommends visiting the Contractor Zone to learn more about the Field Service Reference Guide and the various cut sheets and installation instructions that are available, as well as the simple freight claims process. Focal Point puts as much information as possible at its customers’ fingertips, but also makes sure that when help is needed, its team is ready to answer the call.

“We stand behind our product and we take a lot of pride in keeping people happy. So it is really satisfying to hear customers tell us our team is the best in the industry,” Shikaitis said. “We feel confident that if you have installation questions about one of our products, we can help with our quick-acting Field Service team.”
